San Juan Community Theatre’s Summerfest 2010 premieres for the first time not one…but two…locally written, full length plays produced by the Theatre.
The Connoisseurs arrives first on the Whittier stage, Only a Ridgeline Away moves into the Gubelman Theatre in late August.
Written by Cape San Juan’s Ed Strum (longtime Island writer, actor and director and founder of the former Benefit Players Theatre in Friday Harbor), The Connoisseurs started as a one-act play in the 2004 Islands Playwrights Festival. His full-length version won the 2010 Robert J. Pickering Award for Playwriting Excellence and premiered this year at the Tibbits Opera House in Coldwater, Michigan on March 4-6.
The comedy is a farce set in the home of George and Lynn, who live on a Northwest beach. When many cases of fine, rare and expensive wine float ashore on that beach and their next door neighbors get involved, chaos and hilarity unfold as they scramble to salvage the precious wine. Smuggling, law enforcement, a snoopy neighbor and a rare diamond found in a wine bottle, make for a sidesplitting, topsy-turvy rollercoaster of a summer escape ride.
