These two couples have been volunteering at SJCT for more than a decade,
each partner helping in his/her own way to keep the Theatre thriving

I've been volunteering at the theatre for about 12 years. I had not done any theatre before I got started here, and my first job here was as a house manager, which I really enjoyed. Then I worked in the box office for awhile, and I had a lot to do with getting the Gubelman room set up, especially hanging light fixtures. Now I just do set building. It keeps me busy, and I love doing it!

The best thing about working in the theatre is that you get to know so many good people, and you learn how to do things you couldn't do, or thought you couldn't do, before. By all means, volunteer! It is very rewarding, and needed. It's what keeps the theatre alive.

I started volunteering at the Theatre when Skip did. I started in the Box Office and continue to work there every Saturday. I have also been ticket manager.

There's something about being able to see and meet all the people of the island. It can be challenging, especially when working with new software like this year. But if you are comfortable with computers and meeting new people then you'll be comfortable working in the Box Office.

I feel I have to make a contribution if I want the Theatre to remain viable. I can't imagine not being a part of it. You won't ever catch me on stage, but I attend a lot of performances and I really enjoy volunteering. I would encourage couples to volunteer.

I began volunteering at the Theatre in 1996. My activity of choice was pulling weeds in the front lawn. I found no one wanted to give advice on weeding for fear they would be enlisted for a job they should be doing at home.

Community Theatre was new to me, and I quickly found it could become an addiction. I have moved from weeding to helping build sets to having a part in a play.

Volunteering allowed me to be surrounded by creative, dedicated people who were willing to share their time making the Theatre what it is today. If you are new to the community, the Theatre is an ideal way to experience the Island and the many talented people who live here. The Theatre could not exist without its volunteers, and you don't have to pull weeds to get started? paint brush or a hammer work just as well.

I also began my volunteer work at the Theatre in 1996, when we moved permanently to the Island. I'd lived in New York, and Ed likes to say he couldn't have asked me to move here if it weren't for the Theatre! Indeed, many of my friends have been connected to the Theatre in some way.

I was chairman of the play selection committee for several years, have edited Theatre materials (I was an editor, now a book publicist), and currently work in the Box Office as well as perform many tasks for CATS. I enjoy being the "publicist" for the Theatre while on Box Office duty, telling people about the Theatre and advantages of membership when they come by or call. The Theatre and volunteering here enrich my life.
