In the early 1980s when the concept of a community theater in Friday Harbor was first being discussed, George Thorson was right there on the first committee, helping to produce what would later become the San Juan Community Theatre.  Not only did George volunteer his time to make the Theatre a reality, but he and his wife Sidney were among the first to financially support it.

And that support continues today.  Sidney has kept a strong connection to the Theatre.   Her financial support, she says, is something she feels is important as a member of our island community.  “Everyone in our community should give, even if it’s just a little,” Sidney said.  “The Theatre does not exist without that support.  It’s not a moneymaking concern and has to be supported by the community.”

Sidney says she is so proud of the growth in the variety of programs offered at the Theatre (her favorite is Chamber Music San Juans) and is impressed with the volunteers and behind-the-scenes talents that have helped to develop culture and entertainment for adults and children alike.
