MERRITT OLSEN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, who has been at the helm of San Juan Community Theatre since 2000, came here from Rapid City, South Dakota, where he served as Managing/Artistic Director of Black Hills Community Theatre for eight years.  Merritt has been a professional actor and stage director since 1969. His acting credits include regional theatre, Off-Off Broadway, national tours, television, film, and numerous radio and television commercials. He has taught acting at colleges and universities, and at the Powerhouse Theatre in Santa Monica, California. A graduate of Grinnell College, he received an MFA in Theatre from the University of Iowa. Merritt's wife, Janet, is Director of Bands for Friday Harbor Middle School and High School.

GEORGE JOHNSON, PRESIDENT, moved to San Juan Island in 1987 after a career in Silicon Valley startups, including Apple. With wife Milene Henley, he is a previous owner of The Computer Place and Animal Inn. He has served as a Hospital District Commissioner and Freeholder, and is currently San Juan County's information technology manager.

PATRICIA NIEMAN, President Elect and former President of CATS (the Theatre’s fund-raising arm), brings the experience of many years of volunteering to her position on the Board. She and her husband Bob are both natives of Washington State, and in 1980 when they decided it was time to leave the city behind, Friday Harbor was their destination. Ever since the fund-raising campaign to build the Theatre, SJCT has been very important in their lives (early on, Bob was a member of the Theatre's board).

BRUCE HANSEN, TREASURER, received a B. S. from University of Arizona, then joined the CPA firm now known as Pricewaterhouse Coopers, after serving in the USAF. He worked in private industry as a CFO until his retirement in 2004. A homeowner on San Juan Island since 1988, he has been married to wife Francie for 36 years. Bruce serves as the treasurer of the Mineral Point Homeowners Association.

JANICE PETERSON, Recording Secretary, moved to San Juan Island from Santa Barbara, California, where she was a college professor in the field of communication. She taught public speaking and argumentation and debate at the university and at Santa Barbara City College. She has been married for 44 years to Rich Peterson, who currently serves on the San Juan County Council. She likes to paint, write and practice her skills with digital photography.

SHARI HARRISON (MBA, B.S. Accounting/Finance) grew up in Phoenix, served as Asst. VP-Finance for a multi-hospital system, and with husband Harold co-founded a transportation technology company, serving as its Exec. VP-Finance.  Currently, Shari is managing partner in several diverse businesses (spanning marina development, private aviation and rail transportation) and serves as CATS Treasurer.  One of these days the Harrisons will hire a gardener so that they and their beloved cat can set sail to Alaska . . . or perhaps Tahiti.

DEAN MACK is a graduate of U.C.L.A. School of Engineering and served as a U.S. Naval Officer. He had a career in the Silicon Valley(CA) for over 35 years, founding and managing numerous high technology companies and retired to San Juan Island in 2001. He stays busy with boating, gardening, volunteer work, traveling, and keeping in touch with children and grandchildren.

DAVID RALSTON first came to the islands twenty years ago and was immediately involved in the Community Theatre.  He arrived from a background of community planning, commercial real estate and serving on various community boards.  With an involvement in community redevelopment and as a past chairman of the Santa Barbara County Housing Authority, David looks forward to helping his fellow board members with the program planning and the budgeting necessary to continue the theatre as a vital part of island life.

ANNETTE SCHAFFER was born in Charleston, SC. Since arriving in Friday Harbor in 1991, she has happily woven herself into the fabric of the island community. Annette is a Soroptimist and the 2008 President of the Association of Realtors. Annette is convinced that the vibrant and nurturing community that we enjoy is due in no small part to the energy and dedication of the many volunteers of the San Juan Community Theatre. She is excited to bring a greater awareness of the performing arts theatre to both her colleagues and her clients.

ROCK SORENSEN grew up in Central City, Colorado, received his B.A. in Political Science from Colorado State University (1975), and did post-graduate work at CSU before entering law school. He received his J.D. from the Denver University School of Law (1979), where he served on the staff of the Denver Law Journal (Law Review). He has 28 years of litigation experience. Licensed in both Colorado and Washington, his law practice emphasizes plaintiff's personal injury, construction defects litigation, insurance matters, and business disputes. He has also served as both an arbitrator and mediator in numerous civil litigation matters and has authored legislation adopted by the Colorado General Assembly. Rock is married to Judi Mio and has lived full-time on San Juan Island since 2001.

SALLY TODD moved to San Juan Island from North Carolina, never imagining how important the Community Theatre would become to the quality of her island life. She has enjoyed being on stage with the San Juan Singers in concerts as well as opera and Broadway productions, as Marcellina in the Marriage of Figaro and as a member of the chorus in Hello Dolly. In her board role, Sally brings experience in education, management positions in health care organizations, and having owned her own business.

DAVID VANDERWAL graduated with a B.A. from Hope College and a B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering from The University of Michigan in 1972.  He retired from The Boeing Company in May 2009 as Director of Contracts after a 36-year career.  He was founder of a successful model-making company, which he sold in 2004 after 25 years.  He is happily married to Bianca, a former Pan Am Flight attendant from southern Germany. Discussions are still swirling as to where their primary residence shall be, here on the island or in Seattle.  For now they split their time between both.

JACK YELVERTON and his wife, noted artist Ann Walbert, moved to San Juan Island in 2006 after living and working for many years in California.  Jack was employed in technical and administrative management for emerging high technology firms there.  He then organized and managed an international executive search consulting business concentrating on recruiting senior management for both new ventures and Fortune 500 companies throughout the U.S. and abroad.   Among his various  civic projects, he particularly enjoyed working with and advising the group relocating the American Conservatory Theatre to San Francisco and serving as Chairman of the San Francisco Friends of Recreation and Parks, supporting a continuing series of entertainment and cultural programs for the Bay Area.

BILL WERTZ, who was born in York, PA, entered radio broadcasting in 1968, and then moved to Kalamazoo, MI, to start his own Fairfield Broadcasting Company.  In June 2007, he moved to Friday Harbor with his wife, Maria.  Bill enjoys their sailboat AirWaves and cruising the magnificent waters available in the San Juan Islands and beyond.  His entire career has played to the largest theater of all -- the theater of the mind -- and he looks forward to helping in any way he can to continue to ensure the San Juan Community Theatre remains one of the very best “jewels” in the Pacific Northwest.
