Embrace of the Serpent (2015)  Subtitled   NR  123 Minutes

At once blistering and poetic, the ravages of colonialism cast a dark shadow over the South American landscape in this third feature and Oscar-nominated foreign film by Ciro Guerra. Filmed in stunning black-and-white, SERPENT centers on Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and the last survivor of his people, and the two scientists who, over the course of 40 years, build a friendship with him.

From the Oscar winner for “Best Documentary in 2015” to a French feature film based on the true story of American "singer" Florence Foster Jenkins, the premiere season of the SJCT Summer Film Series features a variety of independent films and documentaries.

The series is the brainchild of islander Larry Soll, who says he has always liked independent films and always wanted to have the opportunity to see them on the island. And after SJCT’s projection and sound systems were revamped, it just seemed natural that the Whittier Theatre would be the perfect venue.

“The goal is to offer mind-broadening experiences for islanders, said Larry. “Some will be documentaries, others fantasies. Some will be funny, others not so much.”
