INTRODUCING THE FALL 2026 ADULT THEATRICAL EDUCATION COURSES:
STAGES OF DESIGN

So you’re curious about theatrical design but you aren’t sure where to begin…
 
Stages of Design is a new course series at San Juan Community Theatre (SJCT) that explores the various aspects of theatrical design. SJCT is excited to offer three specialized courses this year in the areas of Scenic, Costume, and Lighting design.
 
Taught by experienced industry professionals, each course is divided into three sessions and is offered FREE OF CHARGE thanks to a generous grant from San Juan County LTAC.
 

 

Scenic Design with Larz Anderson

Mondays - 10/19, 10/26, and 11/2

6:30pm to 8:30pm

Led by Scenic Designer, Larz Anderson, explore how a scenic designer goes from script to stage to create the world of the play! Tour the scene shop to see how the designer's vision comes to life. REGISTER HERE!

 

Costume Design with Courtney Kessler-Jeffrey

November 3rd - 5th, 2026

6:30pm to 8:30pm

Led by Costume Designer, Courtney Kessler-Jeffrey, explore how a costume designer creates a style and illuminates characters in a production. Get familiar with the Costume Shop, and learn how costumes are selected, used, and maintained. REGISTER HERE!

 

Lighting Design with Steve Judson

Mondays 11/23, 11/30, and 12/7

6:30pm to 8:30pm

Led by Lighting Designer, Steve Judson, explore how a lighting designer sets the mood for a production. Gain hands-on experience with theatrical lighting instruments and the light board to create your own lighting looks! REGISTER HERE!

Both beginners and more experienced theatre lovers will find opportunities to expand their horizons and enhance their skills.
 
Whether you’d like to be under the lights or work behind the scenes, you will find workshops to engage and challenge you. During the year, SJCT staff, island theatre arts leaders, and visiting performing artists host classes that may include such topics as acting techniques, sound & lighting design, or stage managing.

Recent Adult Education events have included a Lighting and Set Design Roundtable and a Stage Management Roundtable for veterans and aspiring participants to discuss the ins and outs of the jobs and get inspired to join in.  Keep an eye on the schedule for a Sound Workshop, a Costumer's Roundtable, and more coming up soon.
