The San Juan Community Youth Theatre program’s mission is to nurture the intellectual, artistic and personal development of children and youth through multi-arts education, performing opportunities, and extraordinary theatre experiences.

WORKSHOPS and CLASSES FOR YOUTH



During the year, both SJCT staff and island theatre artists lead afterschool or summer workshops that include such themes as beginning acting, movement on stage, improvisation, singing and behind the scenes technical skills.

*SUMMER MUSICAL THEATRE CAMP
A three-week day camp for experienced actors ages 7 to 18, culminating in public musical theatre performances in the Whittier. Students are required to audition before they are able to register.  Past shows include Disney's Little Mermaid Jr, Disney's Aladdin Jr, Once on This Island Jr and James and the Giant Peach Jr.  Currently we are prepping for Fiddler on the Roof Jr!

FAMILY THEATRE
Under the direction of Penelope Haskew, elementary school students (K-6) and their parents present a fully staged musical in the Whittier each Fall.  Older siblings and relatives are encouraged to get involved on tech crew too!  Past shows include, Stars Lore, A Mythological Musical, Oh No! Granny's Got the Remote!, Macbeth, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, Law and Order; C-rhyme and Pun-ishment, We Are Monsters, The Grunch, Shakespeare Rocks, and Wind in the Willows.  2019's Family Theatre will be I Never Saw Another Butterfly.

*SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS
SJCT works with the San Juan Island School District and Spring Street International School on their annual productions presented in the Whittier and Gubelman Theatres.  Recent productions have been  A Midsummer Nights Dream, Stepsisters and The Wolves. 

Past FHHS productions include Alice in Wonderland, The Secret Case of Sherlock Holmes, The Neverending Story, Wizard of Oz, Noises Off!, and others.

Past FHMS productions includeThe Humor Games, Sally Cotter and the Censored Stone, A Walk in The Woods, Escape From Nemotex, The Importance of Being Earnest, Charlotte's Web and others.


SJCT also offers high school students the opportunity to work with Production Staff as an intern through the school year and to get credit as part of Friday Harbor High School's Work Experience program.
